Among the footage shown, Condon and Co. selected a scene that’s not in the book, a clip Condon said he realized could be risky to show to these devoted fans who waited online for days outside the San Diego Convention Center to get a glimpse at the early footage of their favorite franchise. Even after the screening, he said he wasn’t sure how it played to the rabid fan base that has turned the franchise into a $1.8-billion enterprise, and demands that its beloved source material is not messed with too much.
“With Kristen [Stewart] next to me, we were so intent on capturing everything powerful in the book. But sometimes, if you respect what movies do and what novels do, you’ve got to sometimes go in a different direction,” said Condon, who is still editing the film.
The director’s added scene features a showdown between the werewolf Jacob (Taylor Lautner) and his wolf pack, which he is leaving in order to watch over Bella and Edward. Condon’s other material featured a glimpse of the honeymoon in Brazil, focused specifically on Bella’s wedding-night jitters.
“It’s going to be interesting now,” Condon said. “I’m in that world now, and the best thing is also the worst thing. And the best thing is these fans care so much.”
