Robert Pattinson is the New Batman!

Citizens of Gotham City, lend me your ears. The
Battinson is officially taking flight.

After rumors of Robert Pattinson donning the cowl in the upcoming Matt Reeves' Batman film, Variety is now reporting that Warner Bros. has sealed the deal. The pasty heartthrob has apparently won the race, beating out other rumored contenders, including Nicholas Hoult. According to Deadline, the studio was "torn between [Pattinson] and Nicholas Hoult, and wanted both of the actors on tape because this is such a big decision on a cornerstone Warner Bros franchise."

This news comes after outcries of both support and criticism of Pattinson, with some fans of the beloved DC character even going so far as making petitions to decry the mere idea of the actor assuming the dark black underoos. Come on internet. We can do better.

The Batman, originally a project that was to be helmed by Ben Affleck, is going to be directed by Matt Reeves later this year, according to sources at Deadline. The film will be produced Dylan Clark, the same producer who worked on the fantastic Planet of the Apes trilogy that Reeves directed.

According to Deadline, this version of Batman will see Bruce Wayne as a younger man, in his "formative" years as the hero. The deal being worked out with Pattinson is reportedly including "options on at least two more films."

After years of being seen as the moody goth vampire in the Twilight series, Pattinson has since made quite a name for himself in the art cinema scene. He's starred in projects from indie darlings like Claire Denis, and even taking a lead role in a David Cronenberg film, Cosmopolis. But it seems that it's been difficult for Pattinson to drop the vampire thing. With what could be years of a Pattinson Dark Knight upon us now, it seems that the actor may, at long last, find himself in a new light.
