Fans who love “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 1” can buy a platform bed

 that looks just like the one in the movie at MASHstudios, a 

design studio and furniture maker in Los Angeles.

It happens “a lot.”

Someone walks into s’Wonderful Interiors, the quirky furniture and fabric store 
Dennis Floyd owns with partner Terence Bartholomew in Fort Wayne’s 
Covington Plaza, and names a movie or TV show.

A couple of times a week, she says, a group of women will come into the 
store and have their pictures taken by – or on – a bed flanked by a cardboard
 cutout of Edward Cullen, the heartthrob vampire from the “Twilight” saga.

MASHstudios has sold more than a few of these platform beds.

That’s because the bed is practically a dead ringer for the one in the movie

 in which Edward claims his Bella – a bed that, minus the special effects, was also 

created by the studio’s furniture makers.

“It’s the exact same bed,” Magbee says. “Actually, the bed in the movie

 was a custom version because we built one with a headboard.”

The movie’s set designers liked the bed, she says, for its dominating 

presence – it’s a solidly rectangular platform with tall, square posts for holding 

a canopy to create a romantic otherworld on the mattress.

People who have bought the $4,400 bed – and the shop has sold 

“several” – have liked not just the design but the association with

 the movie, Magbee says.

“They want that fantasy element. … It’s a conversation starter,” 

Magbee says of the bed. 

“People think if Hollywood stylists chose it, it must be a cool piece.

 It becomes the ‘it’ bed.”

Edward looked phenomenal in his tuxedo. Details on the boys please!
We put a lot of work into that too because we wanted to have them display a special, made-to-order feel. We didn’t want people to feel like you could just go out and buy them.

Well, there’s nothing off-the-rack about any of this.
[Laughs] No off-the-rack! Never. I drew up my ideal ideas for all the tuxedos. We wanted them to have a vintage feel, that sort of Edwardian turn-of-the-century vibe. Edward says, “I’ve been waiting a hundred years to marry you,” so we thought Alice would have fun riffing off of that.
But at the same time we didn’t want it to look theatrical, we wanted contemporary, young, and fresh. I drew up something that combined the lines of Edwardian formalwear and we made it up in beautiful contemporary Italian wools and gorgeous shirting materials. We had a fantastic collaboration with Brioni. Do you know Brioni, the wonderful Italian tailors?

Can we get onto a really important topic now? Um. Edward. IN SHORTS. Discuss.
How crazy is that?

Insane! I’d never dreamt that I’d see the back of that man’s knee.
There’s going to be so many inches of journalism written about this.

They have an instant freakout! I think it has to do with their public school uniforms that they wear as kids.

It’s all charcoal boiled wool.
Completely. Itchy, scratchy… they go, NOOOOOO long pants! We tried all sorts of different lengths but we ended up with a really classic look. My references were the Kennedys on summer vacation. That classic American summer wear. We went crisp with cool natural fibers, nautical navies and whites, trying to capture that classic style. More often than not, we went with a rolled-up chino but we didn’t think we could get away with not doing a short for a Brazilian scorching honeymoon so there you go.

Bill Condon's Interview with Fandango

Fandango The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn director Bill Condon graciously took the time to talk to us about what's on the mind of every Twilighter now that we're nearing the final weeks before the film.

He's continued to remain tight-lipped about some details (which will make for a better moviegoing experience, of course) but he had much to say on the birth scene (his favorite), the highly anticipated wedding, as well as additional scenes from Edward's point of view! Warning: This interview contains spoilers.

Fandango: Fans are really looking forward to the wedding, the honeymoon, the birth and Bella's transformation scenes. What was your favorite to film and why?

Condon: They're all really fun but I have to say the birth. There was something that happened on those nights, but specifically the first night – there was something electric about it, so intense. Kristen [Stewart] was so powerful. Obviously, it's a very feverish scene with everybody kind of getting into that mode. It happens on a movie set sometimes. Everyone gets very hushed, and after and between the takes everyone's walking around, whispering and not talking – it was one of those. Kristen didn't get up. She was on that gurney and spent hours and hours there. That scene is the one I will remember more than anything.

Fandango: What is Irina doing at the wedding (as seen in movie photos)? That's noticeably different from the book.

Condon: In that case, it's just about good movie storytelling. Just imagine if she's not there and then in the second movie, she shows up, sees Renesmee and freaks out. No one will know who she is. People will talk about who she is, as they do in the book. Or you'd be stuck with some clunky flashback. To make something really cinematic, you put it into the present tense. She doesn't want to come, she's convinced to come, she gets there, she sees something that upsets her and she leaves – so that you see, you experience what it is that's bothering her. It's because her problem with the Cullens is the lynchpin for the entire second movie. Part of it why it's there has to do with servicing what's going to happen in the first half hour of the second film.

Fandango: You mentioned that Kristen Stewart cried when she read the wedding part of the book. Why do you think it resonated so much, and what other parts resonated with you?

Condon: I think so much of it resonated because the stakes were so high. A wedding is always a really moving thing, but [Bella] is walking down that aisle knowing she's never going to see her parents again. That's the thing that I think adds this extra kick of emotion. It's one thing to say goodbye to your dad and your mom and to thank them as you're going off to your honeymoon, but when you know you're going to be a vampire and never exist in [human] form again, it's something else. I think that was a big one – just talking about the movie a while before we started. Forget about the vampires and werewolves and everything. What are the human challenges? One of them is that first difficult year of marriage. You've had the fantasy, you've had the dream, you've gotten your dream, now it's a reality. Now you're waking up with him or her every day. What adjustments do you have to make when you change this fantasy to reality? That's an interesting human question. There's a lot of resonant stuff through the book that was very real on that level.

Fandango: You've also said there's going to be a choreographed dance number at the wedding.

Condon: It's very brief, but absolutely! It was a lot of fun. All I can say is that Jackson [Rathbone] and Ashley [Greene] are incredibly good dancers. They should make musical films.

Fandango: Was it an actual musical number?

Condon: This is not a musical number on a stage or anything. This is just people dancing at a wedding, that's all. It's just that we had a choreographer to help us.

Fandango: How excited are you for fans to see the wedding scene? It must've taken high-security to keep the wedding dress from getting leaked.

Condon: I know! We're three weeks out and it still hasn't leaked. I'm so happy. Oh, I can't wait. We're going to have our premiere two weeks from Monday and I'm just so looking forward to being there with fans and just getting a sense of what they think. It is a challenge. There are other surprises in there too that we've been able to keep, but it's harder to do it these days.

Fandango: This being a PG-13 film, how challenging was it to find the balance of being appropriate and yet sexy and romantic during the honeymoon scenes?

Condon: I think it was hard. I think the crucial thing was keeping it romantic because that's what it's about. You'll see it's done in a slightly different way. I don't want to give it away. It's in pieces, let's say. You don't get it all at once.

Fandango: We get so much of Bella's and Jacob's view in the last book, but what specific parts do we get to see more of Edward's point of view?

Condon: There's something that we put in there that's referred to in an earlier book. We actually get to see Edward in his early life as a vampire and hear his thoughts about that. There's a glimpse of him in Twilight describing how he got turned, how he got changed by Carlisle, but this is more extensive. I do think we get more inside Edward and he changes a lot, too. The wedding has an effect on him. There's an aspect of self-loathing to him about what he did when he was a vampire [earlier] that he releases through Bella's love. I think that's a fun thing to watch.

"I think we have influenced pop culture and vampire stuff, because there are a lot of things that look exactly like Twilight now. There was a strange energy about it which I don't think anyone saw coming. Maybe it will be emulated again."

About Edward "There are certainly incredibly bizarre moments in the story. But I think its good. I think in every movie -Edward becomes more and more human. He is like stunted with experiences. He does not have normal life experiences. I've never really seen Edward as a hero to be honest. I think both Edward and Jacob are almost the opposite of what a hero is. I think both of them are incredibly blinkered to a lot of things. Throughout the series , they become a little bit more open to the rest of the world and other people's interests, especially Edward."

"I think its really in this film and the second part, when he has a kid, that he is allowed to think. He is controlling, introverted, kind of insular person. As soon as he has a kid, it completely changes his mind. He becomes a different person. He can accept his maturity. Whereas before, he just refused to accept anything about his life , other than the fact that he almost puts all his love to Bella. He almost puts all his responsibilities into that relationship so he doesn't have to deal with anything. Its like the only thing keeping him alive is this girl. There is nothing else to him in this world so he has not really claimed anything. And then as soon as you bring in another creature into the world, then your realm of understanding and your realm of interests and priorities have become much wider."

"Since I fell into acting to begin with, I have been basically learning and just experimenting with how to be better. What I actually wanted to do with myself through each movie is to experiment. Up until the first Twilight, you could really try and find your style and share your ideas without being judged too harshly. But then, after the first one, everyone is watching your work.

"Because your movies are popular, you are the most seen. And you are expected to be the finished product. You are supposed to be polished. You are supposed to be a professional. But that just does not happen overnight. Maybe it does with some people . I do not know. I do not necessarily want to be defined by that."

"I have been kind of trying to think of how to achieve want I want to achieve in the context of everyone watching and kind of judging. It kind of stressed me out for a little bit. But now I guess, I am more relaxed because its the end of the series. I used to have to wedge in other movies between Twilght movies. And I was always concerned that I might be oversaturating audiences with Edward, Edward, Edward all the time. But as it has finished, I feel like I do not really have anything to lose and I can do whatever I feel might be cool."

Q: What is your favorite quote/scene in the movie/and in the books?
MR: I'd have to say the honeymoon scenes. very romantic and playful. lovely to see Edward and Bella having fun.

Q: What percentage of the Book were you actually able to get into the movie? We know added additional scenes, but did you get mirror close to our favortie scenes?
MR: Hi misty! Good to hear from you. Because we split the one book into two movies, it gave us a lot more room to include as much as possible from the books. Particularly in the first part. We wanted all our favorite scenes to be included - of course everyone has different favorites, but hopefully you'll be happy.



Q: Hey Melissa! How did you translate all the wolf to wolf monologue in Breaking Dawn? Are they voice overs or are the conversations in their human form?
MR: There was a lot of discussion about the inter-wolf dialogue. In the end, the book pretty much dictated our approach making most of it voice over - but in a stylized way.

MR: there's not a screenwriter alive who hasn't had favorite scenes cut, either for budget reasons in production, or for pacing and storytelling reasons in editing. But honestly, when I saw the various cuts of the movie, I have to say I didn't miss them, can't even really remember what they were!

Q: Are we having a lot of romantic scenes between Edward and Bella on Breaking Dawn? Without all the pain that he feels when kiss her, and stuffs like that!
MR: There are some AWESOME romantic scenes for Bella and Edward! Seriously. The wedding is lush and emotional, the honeymoon is truly sexy. Trust me on this one.

Q: Thanks for bringing the adults more to the front. As a mom, I appreciate it.
MR: Glad you like it! Breaking Dawn is actually a very adult tale. Our characters are dealing with very grown up issues. Hoping you like it as well.

MR: Stephenie has been a wonderful collaborator. She, like the Producers, director and studio, gives me feedback on every stage of my process - from outline, to first draft to finished draft. Additionally, whenever I'm stuck on a scene or a storyline, I'll call or email her to either ask her about a certain character's backstory, maybe even


Q: Melissa - i've heard that this is the funniest movie to date. Did you make conscious effort to make Edward "lighter" for this one?
MR: Indeed Edward begins BD1 in a much lighter place - and yes, it was a very conscious choice. He's marrying Bella! He's the happiest vampire in the world. And then the honeymoon, though not without its... complications, is playful and romantic. But then - things get very dark, very fast, and Edward is at his darkest moment yet.

Q: Melissa,Have you watched Breaking Dawn in it's entirety? If so,were you moved by it emotionaly?
MR: I've seen a couple different cuts, and will see the most recent soon. I was sitting in the theater with some other people and began to hear gasps - I was worried for a moment, thinking, oh no, they're laughing (at a very serious moment). Then I realized, no, theyre crying. Not just crying, sobbing!

Q: Hey melissa who was ur favorite character go make and watch come to life? and why
MR: Watching Kristen and Rob embody those characters is a screenwriter's (and everyone else's) dream. Their chemistry is amazing, and very rare. But writing for Jacob, tracking his growth, translating his passion, fire and sense of humor - that's fun.

Q: Hello Melissa! From what I've seen, Breaking Dawn looks amazing! How was it like to work with Bill? And how would you describe him as an producer of Breaking Dawn? THANK YOU for being part of bringing te books to life! Hugs from Victoria, Norway
MR: our director Bill Condon. I've worked with many directors over my 20 year career (wow, 20... that just aged me!). And of course, I've work with several on the Twi series alone - ALL of whom were truly unique, great experiences (and I'm not just saying that). But I will say that, in my very long career, my collaboration with Bill was the best writer/director collaboration I've ever had. I think a lot of that is because he himself is a screenwriter (academy award winning no less!). So he spoke my language - story, stucture, character, theme. He helped me take the characters to new emotional depths... He's generous, and collaborative. I could go on and on

Q: Melissa... how on earth did you guys pull off that birth scene? From the way I envision it in the books I can't even to begin to imagine how you guys got it on screen without an x rating....
MR: After writing for Dexter for four years, I've come to understand that what's most terrifying isn't necessariyl what you see, it's what you DON'T see. The book really informed the way I wrote the scene - all from Bella's point of view. It conveys her terror, and the terror of Edward and Jacob. And Bill directed it with such intensity, I was mesmerized.

Q: Melissa ---- One More Question I just thought of. ---- Were you ON SET for the Last Filming? What was it like, knowing this was the last time you would be with your Twilight Family on set?
MR: I was on set for the most important scene in the movie! The wedding! If you look closely, you'll see me as one of the wedding guests (along with our producer Wyck Godfrey and Stephenie too!)

MR: The moment I finished the last draft of the last movie - I felt sad (to leave Stephenie's world... plus I so loved working with this team), free (it was time to move on), worried (what was next?!), excited (to see Bill bring it too life).

A dream wedding with Edward
All little girls dream about the perfect wedding. For Kristen Stewart, this dream sort of came true. The beautiful brunette is secretly (well, not so much) her co-star Robert Pattinson since the beginning of the Twilight adventure. Fans will see see their wish come to life soon.
For Kristen, walking down the aisle was a memorable experience. Even if she’ll never admit it, when she talks about the event that is ‘her’ wedding in Twilight and says how wonderful of a day it was, for her, sort of a rehearsal for the real thing.
So, for now, everyone, including the lovebirds, will have to be satisfied with this rehearsal. Breaking Dawn is at the same time an end and a beginning for one of the most cherished couples.

LS: Can you tell us what happens in Breaking Dawn?
KS: Of course. You will renew with the couple that you got to know since the beginning except that it’s not the story of how they will stay together. It’s done, they’re together, they’re tied together. The beginning of the movie is the happiest of the series. it’s light. They know one another so well now. They can express their love.

LS: What moments were more precious for you?
KS: The wedding scene, the honeymoon and the birth of their daughter are the moments I loved.

LS: Fans are excited about the wedding… What can you tell us?
KS: It’s really, really beautiful. I remember that on set, I went to see Bill Condon, our producer and told him ‘Wow, thank you for letting me act out such a beautiful wedding’. It was very personal for me. All the actors were there, Stephenie was there as well, sitting in the back. It was a great feeling! There was… oh, I’m saying things I’m not supposed to talk about. I have problems filtering myself. I’m transparent, like Rob. (laughs)

LS: Let’s talk about your wedding dress..
KS: The dress? It was so tight! Really tight. But I loved wearing it, it was beautiful. Most of the time, I had to wear a Volturi cape and that, I hated. You just want to feel beautiful on your wedding day and everytime they yelled ‘Cut!’, someone ran over to cover me with the cape. It was like ‘Where am I?”. It was surreal.

LS: What was your reaction when you saw the scene where you give birth to Renesmee?
KS: It was really cool. I think we did that scene in the most extreme way possible because it’s not a normal birth. We filmed that scene for two days. A ‘labor’ of two days (laughs) that was really hard. In the book, there’s a scene where Bella suffocates on the blood that she drank and where she’s going nuts. But, she’s able to fight with more energy than any human because she has a bit of Edward in her.

LS: Did you have to give yourself pep talks for some of the scenes? Did you use a lot of music?
KS: Yes, I used music. On set, while we were filming the ceremony, there was a song playing that was perfect. It was the Band of Horses song ‘For Annabelle’ and it was getting to me everytime I heard it. It’s one of the songs that filled me with emotions.
LS: What was the most secretive scene?
KS: The wedding scene. It was done secret service style. On set, the crew were complaining that they couldn’t use their cell phones. Us, the actors, couldn’t understand why but we knew that if the dress showed up on the internet, we were screwed. (laughs) They were always hiding the dress.

LS: Breaking Dawn was an emotional roller coaster ride for Bella. How did you live that shoot?
KS: Everything affected me. I still can’t separate myself from Bella. I don’t want people to think it’s only that character, I’m like that with all my characters. I went through a lot of emotions while making these movies. I was 17 when I started playing Bella. These last movies are filled with intense and immense moments and they’re not only based on fantasy but also on reality. I saw myself while acting those scenes.

LS: Being pregnant is an experience that changes your life. Did anything in the movie changed your life if only for a moment?
KS: I was recently asked how it felt to be in a movie that was based on such a fantasy and for me, as well as for the other actors, it was the most REAL experience because anything can happen in life. I never lived an experience like Bella’s but I could feel everything for her.

LS: After all these years, you finally experienced the vampire makeup. Was Rob right when he complained?
KS: (laughs)He had every right to complain! You’re under the impression of being jailed within your body all day, even though it helps to play the role. We were aware of all movements. The contacts were awful. We couldn’t see anything. It was really hard when Rob and I were doing scenes with both of us wearing them.

LS: Are you starting to feel emotional now that the end is near?
KS: I’m very happy with it all. I’m proud of the cast and crew, of myself and of the movies. I saw the first cut and I’m very happy with it. I love this movie.

LS: How did the last scenes go?
KS: It was very late at night and someone said ‘There! We’re done, yes, we’re done’. It was so weird. We didn’t have a party because everyone was tired after a week of night shoots. That the film was done was a very satisfying experience. I absorbed and appreciated it for something real. Seeing everyone at my wedding was really cool.

LS: What’s interesting in this movie compared to all the others?
KS: Everything! It gives you what you’ve been waiting for. Bella is a fighter. She fought for what she believed was her destiny. When you see her, you see her fight and you realize that she’ll die, you understand what she keeps saying throughout the series that she’s ready to die for her destiny and that now, she’s fully ready to do so. When you see that truth in her, it’s hard to take in but the reality is Twilight is based on that truth. People are going to love these movies.
